One English Test, Different Rules: New TOEFL Requirement Review Highlights a Costly Application Mistake

Posted October 28, 2026 by AidossAcademy

A five-pathway review published by Aidoss Academy shows that TOEFL acceptance varies sharply across professional registration and immigration routes. Applicants are urged to verify requirements directly before choosing an examination.

An English-language exam can demonstrate strong communication skills and still be the wrong test for
a professional application. The deciding factor is not the candidate’s proficiency alone, but whether a
specific licensing authority or immigration program accepts that examination.
Aidoss Academy has published a comparison of five professional and immigration pathways to help
applicants identify this often-overlooked distinction. Among the routes reviewed, the UK Nursing and
Midwifery Council, ECFMG Pathways and Canada’s Express Entry do not list TOEFL iBT as an
accepted test for the relevant requirement. Australia’s Ahpra and Engineers Australia do accept
TOEFL iBT subject to their conditions.
The contrast is especially clear between nursing routes. The UK Nursing and Midwifery Council
accepts IELTS Academic and OET as English-language test evidence; Australia’s Ahpra includes
TOEFL iBT, but specifies a test-centre-based TOEFL iBT Australia option and registration conditions.
For engineering applicants, Engineers Australia’s migration skills assessment guidance identifies
TOEFL iBT among accepted tests. Its published section minimums for tests taken on or after 7 August
2025 are 16 Listening, 16 Reading, 19 Writing and 19 Speaking. These thresholds are specific to that
assessment route and test-date policy.
Applicants whose destination accepts TOEFL can find an overview of current-format preparation and
the language skills involved at https://aidossacademy.com.
Aidoss Academy’s learning materials address academic reading, listening for detail, structured
speaking and written communication. They also help students focus on interpreting task instructions,
detecting weaknesses and organizing study around a defined objective.
The five pathways are illustrative examples, not a representative sample of all professional bodies
worldwide. A university, licensing board and immigration authority can require different exams even
when they operate in the same country.
The underlying message is procedural: candidates should identify the exact decision-making body,
consult its official accepted-tests page, verify section thresholds and validity periods, and check

whether any test-centre or application-route rules apply.
Aidoss Academy’s comparison was developed using published regulator requirements. Because these
rules can change, the official institution or regulator remains the definitive source at the time of
application.
