Why a TOEFL Score of 5.0 Now Means Something Very Different to University Applicants

Posted October 31, 2026 by AidossAcademy

The TOEFL iBT’s new 1–6 scoring system is changing how students interpret admissions requirements. Aidoss Academy has published a free conversion resource to help learners compare the new scale with older 0–120 score references.

A TOEFL result of 5.0 may appear surprisingly low to anyone accustomed to the old 0–120 scoring
system. On the examination introduced in January 2026, however, 5.0 corresponds approximately to
95–106 under the previous scale and aligns with C1 in the CEFR proficiency framework.
That difference is creating a practical challenge for university applicants. Many older admissions pages
and student discussions refer to scores such as 80, 90 or 100, while current TOEFL score reports use
half-point steps on a 1–6 scale.
ETS’s published comparison places 4.0 at roughly 72–85 on the earlier scale, 4.5 at 86–94, 5.0 at
95–106 and 5.5 at 107–113. These are approximate correspondences between reporting systems, not
guaranteed predictions of individual performance.
The transition is especially important when an institution uses score thresholds. ETS explains that
choosing 5.5 instead of 5.0 for a former 100-point requirement could inadvertently exclude some
otherwise qualified applicants. Admissions offices must establish their own requirements; applicants
should not treat a converter as an official admissions decision.
Aidoss Academy has published explanatory resources for students comparing scores and planning
their next steps. Learners trying to understand the current TOEFL preparation framework can find more

Through its preparation resources, Aidoss Academy helps learners develop academic reading
comprehension, listening accuracy, clearer spoken responses and organized written arguments. It also
encourages students to set a defined target, identify weaker sections and practice with the current test
structure in mind.
ETS says that during the two-year transition following January 2026, reports also show a comparable
overall 0–120 score alongside the new scoring format and CEFR information.
Aidoss Academy’s free score-conversion resource aims to make the two systems easier to interpret.
The tool is a planning reference; applicants should check the official published requirement for their
program and use their official score report when submitting an application.

The broader implication is that students preparing for international admissions now need two forms of
accuracy: the language skills to meet the requirement, and the ability to understand which score scale
the institution is using.
