In addition to a copy placed at the US Library of Congress in Washington DC, 16 copies will be distributed to select US universities

Originally published in 2024, 'The First 20 Years - How Rupavahini's Founding Generation Shaped Television in Sri Lanka' by Ajita Kadirgamar, traces the history of television in Sri Lanka through factual records, stories and reminiscences of the early pioneers in the industry.

The author herself, who was a well-known television personality from the station’s inception in 1982, wrote the book to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the state television station, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC,) which fell in February 2022.

In 2025, the US Embassy in Colombo requested a copy of the book for the US Library of Congress located in Washington, D.C., the world's largest library. Available here are millions of cataloged books and other print materials in 470 languages.

“Today, on request, I delivered 16 copies to the US Embassy in Colombo, which will be distributed to select US universities. I am honoured and humbled because this validates the purpose of writing this book, which was to place on record historical facts about the birth and growth of television in Sri Lanka for archival purposes,” stated the author.

Unfortunately, many of the founding members of the TV industry have now passed away, however the book has been able to capture and retain some of their stories and experiences for posterity.

The nearly 700-page book contains a 30-page glossary of names of all those mentioned or quoted, making it the most comprehensive publication on the television industry in the country.
