Marine biofuel is a renewable energy source derived from biological materials such as algae, waste oils, and other organic feedstocks, designed specifically to power ships and other marine vessels. It represents a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels like heavy fuel oil and diesel, which are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter. As the global shipping industry faces increasing environmental regulations and pressure to decarbonize, marine biofuels have emerged as a promising solution to help achieve lower emissions while maintaining efficient maritime operations.
The production of marine biofuels involves converting biomass into liquid fuels through various biological and thermochemical processes. Common feedstocks include microalgae, macroalgae (seaweed), used cooking oil, animal fats, agricultural residues, and waste lipids. Among these, algae-based biofuels are particularly attractive because algae can grow in seawater, do not compete with food crops for land, and have a high oil yield potential. The oils extracted from these feedstocks can be processed into biofuels such as biodiesel, bio-methanol, bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas), and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), which can be used directly or blended with conventional marine fuels.
One of the main advantages of marine biofuel is its compatibility with existing marine engines and infrastructure. Many biofuels can be used as “drop-in” fuels, meaning they can be blended with conventional fuels without significant modifications to engines, fuel tanks, or distribution systems. This allows ship operators to transition toward cleaner energy sources gradually, reducing both costs and operational risks. Marine biofuels also offer substantial environmental benefits, including up to 80–90% reductions in carbon dioxide emissions compared to fossil fuels, depending on the feedstock and production method. They also contain little or no sulfur, helping ships comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) global sulfur cap and other emission control regulations.
