Alpha Alternative Jr School invites community to experience democratic education in action

TORONTO, ON – Alpha Alternative Jr School, Toronto's first alternative public school and a pioneer in democratic education, will host its inaugural homecoming celebration on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 PM at 20 Brant Street.

The event marks a milestone for the school that has been challenging traditional education models since 1972, offering students the freedom to choose what, how, and when they learn in a supportive, multi-age environment.

"For over five decades, Alpha has proven that when children are trusted to lead their own learning, they thrive," said Diane Hamiton, a teacher at Alpha Alternative Jr School. "This homecoming celebration is an opportunity for our community to come together and for prospective families to see firsthand what makes democratic education so powerful."

A Different Approach to Learning

Alpha Alternative Jr School operates on principles of democratic education, where students have considerable freedom in their learning journey. The school provides individual feedback instead of traditional grades or tests, emphasizing social-emotional learning, self-directed learning, and democratic decision-making as foundations of their program.

"Alpha kids love to come to school," noted Natasha Fahel, whose child attends Alpha. "It's a messy and joyful place where every child's voice matters and creativity flourishes."

The school has practiced equity admissions since 2007, welcoming families from diverse backgrounds and ensuring accessibility to their unique educational approach.

Community Celebration Open to All

The homecoming event is open to the public and will feature:
• Tours of the school facilities ( only by request)
• Opportunities to meet current families, teachers, and alumni
• A community dinner (provided free of charge)
• Presentations about Alpha's educational philosophy and approach
• Stories from graduates who have thrived in Alpha's democratic environment

"We want people to experience what Alpha is all about," said Sofia, Liako. "This isn't just about celebrating our past – it's about inspiring the next generation of families who are looking for an educational environment where their children can truly belong."
