“WHAT COULD A WELLNESS RETREAT POSSIBLY TEACH ME?” was the smug train of thought that accompanied my pre-arrival to Anantara Layan Resort. The latest addition at this Andaman Sea–fronting property is wellness multiverse Layan Life. The sparkly-new center, housed in a rectangular-shaped light-filled building, overlooks a pond where pink specks of lotus flowers bop gently on the water.
My smugness, however, vanished with a tiny squeak the night before my flight to Phuket. With a sore throat and slight temperature, I wasn’t in the best of shape and was pretty much convinced that the next three days would either be utter hell or spent tucked under the covers in my room.
However, from the moment I arrived at the resort, the Layan Life team took me under their healing, calm-as-a-butterfly wing. In fact, at any wellness retreat (or a resort, for that matter) it’s the staff and how they approach unexpected situations that make the difference. This includes for guests who rock up unwell. After a consultation with the in-house medical doctor, we agreed that I’d have to feel better first before attempting any of the treatments.
