He was in detention in 1985 and imprisoned on Robben Island from 1987 to 1990. He was a Senator for the region of Mpumalanga from 1994 to 1996 and a member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sports, Culture and Recreation, 1996-1997.00He was an MEC for Finance in Mpumalanga from 1997 to 1999 and Chair of the Mpumalanga Legislature from 1999 to 2001.
