International relations became another important part of his career. Chiwayo was appointed to diplomatic responsibilities in Shanghai, where he served as South Africa’s consul-general. His later professional responsibilities included Central and East Asia and regional organisations. The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation subsequently listed him as Chief Director for Central and East Asia and Regional Organisations.
