A professional timeline Lassy LL Chiwayo's career has shown how experience across different types of public institutions can be stored in the form of knowledge and documented. His career in the public sector has spanned political activism, democratic government, provincial administration, municipal leadership and diplomatic service. Chiwayo's connection to the liberation movement began in apartheid South Africa.

His political activism resulted in an arrest in 1985 and imprisonment on Robben Island from 1987 to 1990.

He became an official leader in the emerging democratic government upon South Africa's transition. From 1994 to 1996 he served as a Mpumalanga Senator. And from 1997 to 1999 he was MEC of Sports, Culture and Recreation and then further served as MEC of Finance. These incorporated responsibilities in government administration, cultural affairs, the promotion of sports and provincial financial management.

After public administration, Chiwayo's career moved to local government in which he was elected as the Executive Mayor of Mbombela Local Municipality in Mpumalanga from 2008 to 2011.

During the period, the municipality participated in the organisation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Chiwayo then extended his professional experience into foreign service, playing a role in responsibilities linked with Central East Asia and regional organizations from 2011 to 2012. Other ways in which he has contributed to knowledge sharing by working within different public institutions is through being a published author with GlobalX Publications.
