Chiwayo’s professional story is rooted in South Africa’s political history. During the apartheid era, he was involved in the liberation struggle and was imprisoned on Robben Island.

After South Africa’s democratic transition, Chiwayo became involved in the country’s new political institutions. He served as a Senator representing Mpumalanga before moving into senior provincial government responsibilities.

His career included serving as MEC for Sports, Culture and Recreation and later MEC for Finance. He also served as Chief Whip of the Mpumalanga Legislature, giving him experience in provincial legislative coordination and political administration.

Chiwayo subsequently entered municipal leadership as Executive Mayor of Mbombela Local Municipality, serving from 2008 to 2011. His tenure overlapped with the city’s preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

International responsibilities followed. Chiwayo served as South Africa’s consul-general in Shanghai and developed further experience involving Central and East Asia and regional organisations.

Publishing now provides another way to preserve the knowledge developed through these different roles. His journey brings together political history, government administration, local leadership and international representation.
