Longer Nordic Motorhome Trips Could Reshape Fleet Planning and Tourism Operations.

Research into Nordic motorhome rentals identifies a sustained increase in average trip duration, highlighting potential implications for fleet management, scheduling, and tourism operations.

The duration of a customer's trip may be as crucial as the number of rentals a tourism business registers.

Research that aligns with Elle Tick's dissertation proves an important insight, a development that has occurred within the Nordic motorhome rental industry: over the course of the post-pandemic period, customers increased the average lengths of their rented journeys.

The prior mean duration of rentals hovered around 12 days. These figures grew to roughly 12.7 days in 2021, about 14.3 days in 2022, with 2025 holding average rental length around 14 days.

For motorhome rental companies, there is significant implications in these numbers to consider. An increase in average customer trips will have the effect of shifting certain plans; it is related to vehicle availability, cleanliness schedule, maintenance plans, customer care strategy, future bookings and more.

The rental business with smaller average rental duration would have to assume a cycle in which vehicles would be rented, quickly returned for cleaning and maintenance and made available to another customer within days of first departure; longer average rental periods may have an opposite, fleet usage effect that may force re-thinking into booking calendars, vehicle turnover between rentals, and so forth.

Also, longer customer journeys will have an effect on other entities within the tourism infrastructure including not limited to; further tourist activities at destinations, other types of lodging, additional types of local attractions, extended outdoor adventure opportunity, other restaurants with long meals, and/or, the extended use of locally based merchants and firms.

In effect, analysis indicates that trip length may not necessarily be considered just another data point at which motorhome rental companies may use; rather, it may become an indicator as to a client's true travel habits within a purchase.

Evolution of customer segments comes as a further testament to this concept, as females held 65% of rentals in 2019, yet by 2025, while remaining the dominant group they held only 46%, while couples (2019-~35%) jumped up to near 46% of bookings.

Perhaps future trips may focus on different themes of tourism, as these two customer groups can hold unique preferences from one another, perhaps in trip pace, destinations frequented, a desire for vehicle type/equipment, added flexibility and travel planning time.

Also, it's research to note that external shock may cause new, continuing travel phenomena to come about, as the post-pandemic length of trips never went back to pre-2019 statistics.

The data gathered proves that as customer rental lengths increase; it cannot go without saying that motorhome rental companies should use more analysis when considering customer profile; that alone doesn't show the true nature of the business. All operational indicators and the demographic profile of customer trips may offer stronger strategic business data.

An indicator that small changes in customer trends can manifest greater changes to business operational structure can be visualized in the Nordic motorhome business, and perhaps later with similar service businesses that now offer longer, possibly more specialized trips, due to a rise in their customer travel times.

In essence, the lesson on tourism is to acknowledge that how many people utilize your service may be less significant than how they use it.
