Understanding the Customer May Define the Next Phase of Nordic Motorhome Growth.
Customer intelligence is becoming increasingly valuable in the Nordic motorhome rental industry. Research connected to Elle Tick’s dissertation demonstrates how changes in traveller demographics, geographic origin and rental duration have influenced market development since 2017.
The analysis shows that the pre-pandemic Nordic motorhome market was predominantly international. International customers represented approximately 80% of rentals in 2017 and approximately 84% in 2019.
Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France were among the leading international source markets. The customer profile was also relatively mature, with the average recorded driver age remaining around 45–46 years.
Families represented the dominant customer segment before the pandemic. In 2019, approximately 65% of included rentals involved families, while couples represented approximately 35%.
The average rental duration was around 12 days, indicating that customers typically viewed motorhome rental as part of extended leisure travel.
Then the market entered a period of extraordinary disruption.
In 2020, included rentals declined to 1,257 from 2,290 in 2019. However, the market did not experience only a reduction in volume. It also experienced a major transformation in customer geography.
Local customers increased from approximately 16% of rentals in 2019 to 53% in 2020. This domestic shift continued into 2021, when local customers represented approximately 47% of included rentals.
The trend demonstrates how customer behaviour can adapt when market conditions change. Customers continued to seek leisure experiences but increasingly chose travel options that were compatible with domestic mobility.
International demand returned strongly as restrictions eased. By 2022, international customers represented approximately 86% of rentals.
At the same time, the nature of the journey was changing. Average rental duration increased from approximately 12 days before the pandemic to around 12.7 days in 2021 and 14.3 days in 2022. The average remained close to 14 days through 2025.
This longer-trip trend can influence business strategy across the customer journey. Operators may need to consider vehicle comfort, maintenance standards, equipment, customer support and digital communication as increasingly important components of the rental experience.
The customer mix is changing as well. Couples grew from approximately 35% of rentals in 2019 to nearly 46% by 2025. While families remain an important segment, the growth of couples demonstrates the need for more diversified customer strategies.
The research ultimately shows that businesses should not build their future solely around historical customer profiles. Markets evolve, and successful operators need systems that identify behavioural changes early.
Customer data can support smarter segmentation, more targeted marketing and stronger service design while helping companies respond to emerging opportunities.
The Nordic motorhome rental market offers a valuable example of how customer evolution can become a driver of business transformation.
