A Customer Resilience Revolution Takes Nordic Motor homing to New Heights.
The Nordic motorhome rental market provides some striking evidence for how customers adapt in a world of fluctuating travel routines. Analysis undertaken in connection with a dissertation by Elle Tick explores a dataset of rental transactions, and demonstrates a dramatic shift in the customers that are utilizing this type of travel.
The rental market operated quite logically before the world was rocked in 2020. The majority of rental demand, about 80% in 2017, and about 84% in 2019, came from abroad, with Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France acting as the chief source markets. The market demographics were relatively steady: in 2017 and 2019 average rental age was in the mid-40s, with families making up the dominant market segment at 65% in 2019, against 35% couples in the same year. The dominant tenure remained the holiday-specific one with a booking length that averaged a little under 12 days.
From one booking year to the next everything changed.
Bookings from just 2,290 (2019) dropped to 1,257 in 2020. Booking numbers were only one part of that story. Customer types were the other.
In 2019 only 16% of customers were domestic; but that increased in one go to 53% of all rentals in 2020.
That shift away from international customers signalled a profound adaptation among travellers who could no longer access usual forms of international travel, but still wanted to holiday, demonstrating the responsiveness of customers to prevailing mobility conditions. Rather than abandoning the desire, they redirected its impetus to domestic opportunities. The trend held: the year 2021 saw locals again command a significant share with 47%; by 2022 international arrivals had reclaimed the lions share again at 86% as the world opened up. The oscillation shows a critical dynamic for businesses – customers ARE adaptable.
Another significant observable behaviour change identified is the increase in rental length, from under 12 days prior to the pandemic to around 12.7 in 2021, and closer to 14.3 days in 2022,remaining at just below 14 days all the way to 2025. When renting for a more extended holiday, demands on vehicle reliability, comfort, equipment, as well as booking process smoothness, and the availability of customer support services, likely increases. This also represents another area of change: the number of couple bookings is showing steady growth again from 35% in 2019 to just under 46% in 2025, and demonstrates segmentation shifts occurring also.
Resilience in practice not only as a business operation but within how customers themselves choose to behave and modify their behaviour in response to prevailing constraints seems to a defining trend within the Nordic RV and campervan hiring market and can inform your own business's predictions and segmentation strategy.
The Nordic RV & Campervan market seems a microcosm on how a whole market segment can respond within the confines of new restrictions and constraints.
