GlobalX Publications is highlighting research from the Nordic motorhome rental market which investigates the attitudes and behaviours of customers.
Understanding how customers behave is now an important aspect in the understanding of the Nordic motorhome rental industry. Data on rental transactions since 2017 is analysed, which can be used in the research of Elle Tick to gain insight into the changing demographics of renters, sources of travel and the duration and preference of renting.
The results indicate that Nordic motorhome rental market was already very international prior to COVID-19. About 80% of the rentals were from international customers in 2017, and about 84% in 2019. Most important markets were in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France.
This international customer base was complemented by an relatively developed traveller profile. The average age was recorded driver was around 45-46 years with families as the largest customer segment, as usual. Families typically accounted for nearly 65 percent of included rentals and couples accounted for nearly 35 percent in 2019.
The length of time that customers rent for another key factor. Prior to the pandemic, the average length of rental was around 12 days. This implies that many motorhome renters were engaged in longer leisure trips, which were planned, than in shorter recreational trips.
2020 was a big year of change in the market.
Included rentals declined from 2,290 in 2019 to 1,257 in 2020. The actual shift in the make-up of customers was greater, though. In 2020, 53% of rentals were local customers compared to 16% in 2019.
In the development, the Japanese consumer reaction to external factors is clearly demonstrated. International mobility restrictions didn't lead to customers giving up on leisure travel. Rather, many turned to the opportunities for home travel.
The home-buying trend persisted throughout 2021, accounting for around 47% of the included rentals. The market evolved towards earlier international structure as international mobility picked up. International customers accounted for some 86% of rentals by 2022.
There is also an important change in travel time that the research reveals after the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the average rental periods were around 12 days, but in 2021, the average duration was 12.7 days, and for 2022, was 14.3 days. The average did not change significantly from 14 days up to 2025.
If you rent for longer, it could have a big impact on people's expectations. Extended road time could mean more value to travellers in terms of comfort, reliability, equipment, flexibility of travel and customer service.
There is also a greater diversity of customer segmentation. Families also had a significant role in the market but the segment grew from around a third of rentals in 2019 to almost a half by 2025.
These insights depict the value of customer analytics for businesses and why it needs to be integrated into their long-term strategy. Knowing the customers, where they are from, and how their travel behavior evolves can help to inform more responsive products and services.
Nordic motorhome market is a clear example of business principle that sustainable growth is built upon insights into the changing needs of customers, not on past expectations.
