Travel beyond the immediate sale The ripple effect of travellers deciding to holiday for longer can extend far beyond a business selling a original travel product. Research linked to Elle Tick’s dissertation into the Nordic motorhome market further explores how longer travelling period may encourage further tourist activity. 11 days A longer travel period means that tourists have more time to travel through destinations and are potentially more inclined to have a varied contact with tourism businesses and services. Motorhome travellers travelling longer periods of journey time will need fuel, food, attraction and leisure services, along with other ancillary travel product such as parking, and campsites.
Motorhome rental is an example of a company in itself where there is a potential for linking this with businesses within the broader destination.
The meaning behind this further becomes apparent when this data is compared with customer origins and the research into which countries visitors travel from: Nordic Motorhome rental - customer origin International visitors’ rental proportions The 12 day mark becomes particularly relevant when considering customer origin, with 84% of international visits in 2019 and 86% in 2022 being motorhome rentals, with the research identifying Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France as source markets. International visitors travelling for two weeks on average may also be more inclined to visit more destinations across regions rather than being ‘settled’ within a specific town. Regional tourism organizations, such as tourist boards, can begin to look at routes and opportunities across regions as the tourist is not confined to one location on their trip. There’s also a trend of increased diversity in customers, this include: the rise of couples on their holiday as they increase by two percentage points between 2019 and 2025.
They increase to almost 46% in 2025 as couples on their holiday increased by six percentage points between 2019 and 2025 to almost 46% as domestic customers reduced.
More customers means more variety on the type of customers that will engage in tourism products and services – with couples, families, and domestic vs international tourists having varied needs and expectations when it comes to holidays and their expenditures. While The pandemic highlighted a number of changes in customer behaviour including an increased share of domestic holidays in 2020 versus 2019. Customers on return after lockdown provided strong international travel returns.
However in summary: The significance of the increased average journey lengths in motorhomes can be found in far more than just the rental company. Extended travel means more time on the road and greater opportunities to interact with businesses across the whole destination network as travellers may require fuel, food, attraction tickets, activities, parking, and other day to day travel products and services. As such it is imperative for motorhome rental companies to consider collaborating with the wider tourism industry and vice-versa.
By understanding the role that motorhomes play, as demonstrated in this research, businesses and destinations can better facilitate the entire tourism ecosystem and ensure the extended journey lengths translate into wider tourism benefits for the whole destination.
