The Nordic Motorhome Market Is Expanding Beyond Its Traditional Family-Holiday Customer Base.

Multi-year Nordic motorhome rental research shows a significant rise in the couple segment, suggesting that motorhome tourism is appealing to a broader range of leisure travellers.

Nordic Motorhome Rental Market Demonstrates Customer Diversification, According to Elle Tick’s dissertation research, research on a customer dataset related to the dissertation work is revealing a distinct shift in groups of rental customers over time. Nordic motorhome rentals in 2019 were driven largely by families (an estimated 65 percent of the sample), with approximately 35 percent attributed to couples. By 2025, however, this segment had increased to nearly 46 percent among respondents.

This change provides evidence for market expansion beyond a singular traditional motorhome demographic.

This change in customer base can translate into fresh market opportunities-in terms of how businesses market their offerings, the vehicles and amenities they offer, and how they engage with travellers. It also speaks to the tendency of a travel product that attracts one specific segment of customers to progressively resonate with other types of consumers as the product gains visibility and market adoption. The changing customer base at a Nordic level among the motorhome sector, in particular, adds a dimension of differentiation due to the divergent travel interests among family and couple units, for instance. The research data also indicates changes in average length of stay over time among motorhome renters.

Average duration increased roughly from 12 days in the pre-pandemic era up through 2025 (about 14 days).

This combination of changing traveller groups and lengthened stays illustrates a market expanding in breadth and duration. Beyond the increased number of customers, their character and preferences are also changing. For example, the trend of couples gaining market share could affect how businesses communicate their motorhome offerings, as those who prefer an independent trip at their own pace may approach or react to advertising for families on a journey very differently.

This data also reiterates the value of looking at customer data beyond a single point in time. Trends and shifts are evident only when comparing data over time periods. In the Nordic region, for example, the travel boom between the two sides of the pandemic (more domestic traffic in the pandemic, international in subsequent years) was accompanied by a gradual shift in the consumer types utilizing this travel mode.

The data illustrates why it’s wise to view customer segmentation as an iterative process instead of a static analysis.

In any motorhome rental market, tracking family and couple segmentations can help anticipate and tap into future markets or adjust marketing messages. The lessons also hold true for the larger travel sector-even if a travel service/product, such as renting out motorhomes, remains structurally similar, new customer segments or redefinitions of existing ones can broaden and deepen a market by appealing to different groups of consumers. The increasing penetration of the couple segment therefore highlights this idea that even as a product itself remains fairly consistent, it can be made increasingly relevant to a more diverse market.
