Disability Exchange (https://disabilityexchange.org), a free public resource for Social Security Disability data, has launched a dedicated California disability information hub at https://disabilityexchange.org/states/california/. The resource covers all 58 counties and over 480 cities across the state.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (2023), California has 4,364,431 residents with a disability, representing 11.3% of the state's civilian population of 38.7 million. While this falls below the national average of 13.0%, the sheer number of affected residents makes California the largest disability population in the country by total count.

Key California Disability Statistics:
- Total residents with a disability: 4,364,431
- State disability rate: 11.3% (national average: 13.0%)
- SSDI initial approval rate: approximately 37%
- SSDI initial denial rate: approximately 63%
- Hearing-level (ALJ) approval rate: 59%
- Average SSDI processing time: 222 days (national average: 227 days)

The new California page on Disability Exchange includes county-by-county disability statistics for all 58 counties, city-level data for 480+ California cities, addresses and contact information for California SSA offices, SSDI approval rates at every level of the application process, and median income and poverty data for disabled Californians.

"Getting approved for Social Security Disability in California is harder than most people think," said the team at Disability Exchange. "63% of first-time applicants get denied. Our goal is to give Californians access to the same data and tools that attorneys use, so they can make better decisions about their claims."

Disability Exchange also offers free tools including an SSDI Benefits Calculator, SSI Benefits Calculator, SSDI Back Pay Calculator, and a Disability Eligibility Screener.
