TALLAHASSEE, FL -- April 15, 2026 -- Disability Exchange (https://disabilityexchange.org/states/florida/) has published a detailed breakdown of Social Security disability data for Florida, where 2,924,178 residents are currently living with a disability. The state's 13.5% disability rate sits above the national average of 13.0%, and claimants face an average initial processing time of 343 days, well above the national average.
Florida's SSDI approval rate stands at roughly 40%, meaning the majority of applicants are denied on their first try. With 65 to 70 percent of initial claims getting rejected statewide, most Floridians who need disability benefits end up going through at least one round of appeals. That appeals process can add another 12 to 24 months on top of the already long initial wait.
The staffing situation at SSA isn't helping. The agency cut about 7,000 positions nationwide over the past year, dropping from 57,000 to roughly 50,000 employees. Florida field offices, which serve one of the largest disabled populations in the country, are feeling the pressure. An SSA Inspector General report found that 70% of managers said staffing levels were not enough to handle the number of people walking through their doors.
"We built this tool because people in Florida shouldn't have to guess where they stand," said the team at Disability Exchange. "When you're looking at a 343-day wait just for an initial decision, you need to know what your county's numbers look like and where the closest SSA office is before you even file."
The Disability Exchange Florida page (https://disabilityexchange.org/states/florida/) covers all 67 counties with localized data including disability population counts, approval rates, processing time estimates, and SSA field office addresses. Residents can also use the site's free eligibility screener to check if their condition might qualify before starting the application.
For 2026, the average SSDI benefit in Florida is $1,630 per month, with a maximum of $4,152 per month. SSI recipients get up to $994 per month for individuals. The 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that kicked in this January brought the income cap for Florida Medicaid long-term care programs up to $2,982 per month.
