Global diamond leader De Beers Group has announced the closure of its Lightbox lab-grown diamond jewellery business, marking a new strategic direction focused on natural diamonds and industrial innovation.
Introduced in 2018, the Lightbox initiative was designed to test consumer perceptions and promote transparency in the growing lab-grown diamond (LGD) segment. Following years of market evaluation, De Beers has decided to redirect resources toward its core strengths—natural diamond leadership, traceability technology, and sustainability.
A company spokesperson explained, “This decision aligns with our vision to champion the integrity and value of natural diamonds while continuing to innovate in advanced materials through Element Six.”
While consumer-facing lab-grown jewellery will be phased out, De Beers will continue to develop synthetic diamonds for industrial and high-tech applications such as semiconductors, medical tools, and optics—fields where innovation and durability are critical.
Industry analysts interpret this move as a strategic repositioning, not a retreat. As the lab-grown diamond market faces price declines and commoditization, De Beers is reaffirming its premium heritage, ethical mining practices, and transparent sourcing through its Building Forever initiative.
The shift also complements De Beers’ recent “Desert Diamonds” campaign, celebrating the beauty, rarity, and authenticity of natural gems. Together, these initiatives reflect a brand that evolves with market realities while holding firm to its values of trust and craftsmanship.
By closing Lightbox, De Beers sends a clear message: the future of diamonds lies in heritage and responsibility, where innovation enhances natural beauty rather than replaces it.
