Washington — 25, August — Dr. Gary Mason II’s memoir, Persecuted to Love: A Soldier’s Story, pulls no punches. It’s the true account of a soldier’s fight to hold on to his faith, his integrity, and his career while confronting injustice at the heart of the U.S. Army.
As a young Lieutenant deployed in Iraq, Mason reported what he thought was a one-time racist attack in his cavalry unit. Instead, that report opened the door to a hidden world of abuse, retaliation, and cover-ups reaching into the highest levels of leadership.
What followed was a battle on two fronts: one against enemies abroad, and another against those within the institution he had sworn to serve. Mason’s push for truth brought him face-to-face with powerful figures in the military, Congress, the White House, the Department of Justice—even the President—yet his pleas were met with silence and resistance. In the end, fear of accountability and change cost him his career, forcing him into early retirement.
Yet, Persecuted to Love is not merely a story of persecution—it is a testament to the power of faith. Amid character assassination and threats on his life, Mason turned to God, discovering that unconditional love and reconciliation were the only true answers.
“Those who ignored the truth and those who continue to abuse soldiers never intended for my story to come to light,” says Dr. Mason. “But motivated by the love of God, I refused to be silent.”
Persecuted to Love is more than a memoir—it’s a guide for initiating difficult but necessary conversations about racism, abuse of power, and accountability within institutions.
