Asthalaxmi Innovations Private Limited has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a 15,000-hectare bamboo plantation project in Northeast India. The agreement establishes a non-exclusive collaboration with Earthtree Enviro Private Limited and Jeev Anksh Eco Products Private Limited.
The project targets the cultivation of native bamboo species over the next five years. The initiative is projected to sequester approximately 5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) and generate an estimated 5 million carbon credits during this period. The operational lifespan of the project is planned for up to 40 years. The project’s outcomes are structured to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifi cally targeting Climate Action (SDG 13), Life on Land (SDG 15), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).
Key operational parameters of the initiative include:
● Cultivation of commercially viable native bamboo species, including Bambusa tulda, Bambusa pallida, and Bambusa balcooa.
● Implementation of environmental restoration practices targeting degraded land recovery, soil conservation, biodiversity enhancement, and fl ood prevention.
● Creation of sustainable livelihood opportunities for regional communities through the regulated production of timber and non-timber forest products.
To execute the project, Asthalaxmi Innovations will coordinate on-ground implementation, focusing on land assessment and securing operational consents while ensuring Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) frameworks are maintained. The company will collaborate with grassroots entities, including Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Joint Forest Management Committees (JFMC), and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) for community mobilization.
Earthtree Enviro Private Limited, an Indian subsidiary of the Swedish climate technology fi rm Earthbanc, will structure the project fi nancing for the 40-year term. Utilizing its patented solutions, Earthtree will direct the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verifi cation (MRV) processes and manage the project's registration under recognized carbon standards, such as Verra (VCS) or the Gold Standard, to issue and trade the verifi ed carbon credits.
Jeev Anksh Eco Products Private Limited will oversee day-to-day plantation operations, including nursery establishment and silvicultural management. The company will utilize its expertise in sustainable agriculture, plantation management, and rural livelihood development to facilitate capacity-building programs for local participants.
An initial area of 3,000 hectares has been allocated exclusively for this collaboration during the fi rst two years of the agreement. This primary phase is projected to facilitate the sequestration of 1 million tCO2e and generate 1 million carbon credits over the next 5 years, establishing the operational framework for the broader 15,000-hectare rollout.
