ATEC Global has secured a Letter of Authorisation from the Governments of Malawi and Switzerland under to deploy IoT-enabled induction cookstoves to 76,000 grid-connected households in Lilongwe and Blantyre.

ATEC Global, the world’s leading developer of digitally verified clean cooking projects, has secured a Letter of Authorisation (LOA) from the Governments of Malawi and Switzerland. The LOAs approve the generation of government-authorised carbon credits under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

The LOAs formalise the bilateral climate agreement between the Governments of Malawi and Switzerland. They authorise the generation and transfer of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) to the Swiss Government. In partnership with Swiss Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK (KliK Foundation), the project will transition 76,000 grid connected households from Lilongwe and Blantyre districts to ATEC’s IoT-enabled electric induction cookers and benefit 326,800 people.

The high-efficiency induction stoves use dMRV technology that enables continuous energy metering for accurate and transparent carbon credit issuance. Data from every stove is 100% auditable and verifiable in real-time.

The Activity is based on the Gold Standard’s ‘Methodology for metered & measured energy cooking devices v1.2 and the Comprehensive Lowered Emission Assessment and Reporting Methodology for Cooking Energy Transitions (CLEAR
methodology)2. It is expected to generate approximately 1,791,268 ITMOs by 2030, reflecting verified emission reductions from displacing non-renewable biomass fuels with grid-based electric cooking.

ATEC is leveraging carbon finance to make IoT-enabled induction cookstoves accessible to households in Malawi. Through carbon financing from Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), the project firstly makes eCooking affordable to charcoal-using households, subsidizing the price of the induction stove package inclusive of cookwares by 85%.

Secondly, the project sustains adoption through the Cook2Earn programme. ATEC has budgeted direct cash transfers to households throughout the project which will be based on verified stove usage and ITMO payments.

The purchase of emission reductions by the Swiss Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset KliK (KliK Foundation) will make the project financially viable and will help unlock further investment in the country.

ATEC is proud to support bilateral agreements that scale clean cooking to communities that need it most. Article 6.2 provides the mechanism required to mobilise climate finance, but that capital will only scale if projects deliver accuracy. By integrating IoT technology into every stove, we verify household cooking activity using dMRV technology and ensure transparency and accuracy from the household level to international transfer.- Bhushan Trivedi, Chief Carbon Officer, ATEC

The authorization of this mitigation activity marks a major milestone in Malawi's Article 6.2 journey towards a more climate-friendly future. Electric cooking has the potential to transform everyday life for households while reducing emissions and helping to avoid deforestation. With the first 30,000 e-cookers already sold, it is clear that there is strong demand for this solution and that it is
being embraced by Malawian households.- Andrea Thurner, Head Operations, KliK Foundation
