With UK families increasingly facing years-long waits for neurodevelopmental assessments, founder Ben Friedman is proud to announce the launch of Atypically - https://www.atypically.co.uk — a new national service helping parents navigate private assessment options for ADHD and autism. Drawing on his digital marketing and development background, and his personal experience as a father to an autistic son, Ben founded Atypically to bring transparency, speed and support to a process too often burdened by NHS waiting lists.
“Watching the delays and distress my son experienced a decade ago and how things look even worse now, I realised there has to be a better way,” says Friedman. “Parents shouldn’t be left in limbo for eighteen, twenty-four months or more waiting for answers.” Recent data highlights the scale of the crisis: a Freedom of Information survey found 24 % of people waiting for an NHS ADHD assessment had been waiting between one and two years, and 10 % had been waiting between two and three years. For autism, statistics reveal more than 200,000 people in England waited for an assessment in 2024, with 89% of them waiting longer than the NICE-recommended 13 weeks.
Launched this August, Atypically already partners with a growing network of assessment clinics across the UK. The service supports parents by explaining referral routes, matching them with private clinicians, and helping translate assessment outcomes into practical steps. “Demand is enormous,” Friedman adds. “Parents want clarity, they want support, and above all they want action. We’re here to make sure they don’t feel they’re doing this alone.”
As Atypically expands, the company is committed to delivering trusted, evidence-based pathways—ensuring that families access assessments that meet recognised UK diagnostic standards and that reports are accepted by schools, employers and health services. With a tailored approach and rapid growth, Atypically is working to dramatically reduce the wait for diagnosis and empower neurodiverse children and their families with the guidance and support they deserve.
