SGS reports on the US CPSC’s proposed safety rule for lithium-ion batteries in micromobility products to reduce fire and injury risks.

Baar (July 8, 2026) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 089.26, summarizing the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) notice of proposed rulemaking, 16 CFR 1265, for lithium-ion batteries used in micromobility products and their electrical systems.

Published on June 24, 2026, the proposed rule is intended to reduce the risks of injury and death from electric shock, fires, explosions, gas or flame expulsion, burns, overheating, smoke inhalation and thermal runaway of lithium-ion cells.

The following products are covered by the proposed rule:
• eBikes
• Personal eMobility products
• User-replaceable battery packs
• eBike conversion kits
• Aftermarket battery chargers

The CPSC is open to comments on the proposed rule until August 24, 2026. The rule will affect manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and any entity placing the applicable products on US markets.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 089.26 includes further information on the proposed requirements.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 089.26 for more details.
