Baar (October 8, 2026) – SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 095.26, highlighting China’s publication of GB 20400-2026, which updates the mandatory requirements for leather and fur products.
The updated standard, effective from April 1, 2027, replaces GB 20400-2006. It applies to accessible leather and fur components in daily-use leather and fur products and related articles, as well as recycled leather components used in recycled leather products and finished goods.
GB 20400-2026 includes requirements for the following:
• Carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes
• Formaldehyde
• Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))
• Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs)
• Chlorinated phenols
• Phthalate plasticizers
• Total heavy metals (lead, cadmium)
• Dimethyl fumarate (DMFu)
The standard revises the title, scope, the age definition used in the term ‘infant leather and fur products’ and the expression of ‘conformity judgment’, as well as introducing new requirements and removing certain existing provisions.
The updated standard will affect manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and other stakeholders throughout the supply chain for leather, fur and recycled leather products in China. A transition period has been provided for products manufactured or imported before the effective date. For such products, the standard's requirements will apply from the 19th month following its implementation date.
SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 095.26 includes additional information on the revisions, new requirements and deleted provisions in GB 20400-2026.
Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 095.26 for more details.
