Kseniia Petruk Says Businesses Are Retiring Their Most Valuable People Too Soon

BossBot founder Kseniia Petruk argues that older employees carry skills automation can't replace, and that chasing growth metrics is making businesses forget the people they actually serve.

Kseniia Petruk wants business owners to take a second look at the employees they're first in line to let go: the older ones.

"We've gotten good at retiring the people who actually know how to listen," she says. "Somewhere along the way, chasing bigger numbers, we lost sight of who the business is even for."

Petruk, founder of an AI-powered business platform, spends a surprising amount of her time defending the value of people over software, especially the employees companies are quickest to phase out.

"Someone near retirement, or past it, brings things a model can't fake," she says. "Patience with a frustrated customer. Memory of how the business worked before every decision got reduced to a dashboard metric."

She insists this isn't sentimentality, it's strategy. "Somebody who has spent decades talking to people can defuse an angry customer better than any script ever will," Petruk says. "That's a real skill, and companies are quietly training it out of their teams."

Petruk sees the same pattern everywhere she looks in business. "Everyone's optimizing for growth, conversion, engagement, the same handful of numbers, and forgetting that a business is supposed to serve actual people," she says. "We measure everything and ask what it's for far too rarely."

That, she says, is exactly where AI belongs, and exactly where it should stop. "Let automation handle the repetitive stuff. Scheduling, follow-ups, the same question for the thousandth time, a bot can take that," she says. "But the second a person actually needs to be heard, that has to stay human. Some of your best people for that are the ones you're currently trying not to hire."

Petruk didn't come to software from a technical background. She spent eight months building her platform on her own, coming from food technology and nutrition rather than engineering. "I build AI. I'm not against it," she says. "I'm against using it as cover to overlook people who spent their whole careers learning how to pay attention to other people. Hire them. Keep them. Let the bots take care of what doesn't need a human heart behind it."
