WAYNE, N.J., November 2026 -- Before The Carbon Key Collective talks about a car's paint, its odometer or what it might bring, the firm asks for its paper. Today the company outlined the document review it completes before it agrees to buy, consign or privately represent a vehicle. It encouraged owners to run the same review on their own cars, whether or not they ever plan to sell.
The review rests on six questions:
1. Does the VIN on the car match the title, the registration and every service invoice in the folder?
2. Is the title clean, or are there liens, brands or ownership gaps that must be resolved first?
3. Can the original specification be confirmed from a window sticker, build sheet or factory documentation?
4. Is the service history continuous, or are there stretches nobody can account for?
5. Have accidents, paintwork and repairs been disclosed and documented?
6. Has a qualified independent inspector, not the seller, confirmed the car's present condition?
"You can't polish your way out of a missing year of records," said Ibrahim Asif, founder and CEO of The Carbon Key Collective. "I'd rather have the awkward conversation about the file on day one than let a buyer discover the hole halfway through a deal. Closing a gap early costs everybody less."
Where a file has gaps, the firm works with the owner to close the ones that can be closed: tracing earlier service providers, requesting factory documentation, or arranging an inspection through a qualified third party. When a sale goes ahead, the money is held by a licensed escrow company, not the firm, and the title transfer is coordinated alongside delivery.
The same discipline runs on the buy side. When the firm sources a car for a client, that car's records are checked before the client signs anything, and the client is shown what turned up, good or bad.
"Nobody photographs the paperwork, but it's the one part of the car that follows it to every future owner," Asif said. "Look after the folder the way you look after the paint."
