India's education system is facing a guidance gap that experts say is holding back an entire generation of students from making informed career decisions. According to a recent report on career guidance and mentorship in India, nearly 93 percent of the country's youth are aware of only seven career streams, despite close to 250 being available in the Indian job market today. The same research points to a projected shortfall of 85.2 million skilled professionals in finance, technology, and telecommunications by 2030, a gap industry observers link directly to the lack of early, structured career counselling for students.

The shortage of trained counsellors in schools compounds the problem. Fewer than 3 percent of private schools in Delhi NCR employ a full-time counsellor, even though CBSE guidelines make this mandatory, leaving most students to rely on informal advice from teachers or family rather than a qualified career counsellor.

Government infrastructure has expanded in parallel, with the National Career Service portal now offering free vocational guidance and skill development information nationwide. Platforms like CareerThirst position themselves as filling the personalised, one-on-one layer of guidance that schools and government portals alone have not been able to scale to every student.
