Fuel Cells for Data Centers Market: Where Is the Next Power Infrastructure Opportunity?
The global fuel cells for data centers market was valued at approximately USD 357.21 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 1.94 billion by 2035, growing at a 18.4% CAGR. The expansion of AI workloads, hyperscale facilities and grid-constrained data-center development is creating demand for reliable onsite generation.
AI Is Turning Power Availability Into a Data-Center Constraint
U.S. electricity demand is expected to reach record levels in 2026 and 2027, with AI and data centers among the major drivers. The EIA forecasts U.S. electricity consumption of 4,288 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,356 billion kWh in 2027.
This is strengthening the case for distributed generation. Fuel cells can provide continuous onsite electricity without depending entirely on new grid connections, making them relevant for AI campuses where power availability can determine construction schedules.
Oracle Is Scaling Fuel Cells to Gigawatt Levels
The strongest evidence of commercial adoption is coming from large AI infrastructure projects. Oracle and Bloom Energy expanded their agreement in 2026 to support up to 2.8 GW of fuel-cell capacity, with 1.2 GW initially contracted for Oracle projects.
Oracle's Project Jupiter in New Mexico is planned around up to 2.45 GW of Bloom fuel-cell capacity, replacing the previously planned gas turbines and diesel generators with a single microgrid architecture.
This indicates that fuel cells are moving from supplementary power toward primary power for large AI facilities.
Infrastructure Financing Is Expanding
Capital availability is also changing the market. Brookfield and Bloom Energy expanded their AI infrastructure partnership from $5 billion to $25 billion in June 2026, targeting rapid deployment of power infrastructure for AI facilities.
The significance is broader than one supplier: dedicated financing can allow data-center developers to treat onsite generation as part of the core infrastructure investment rather than an auxiliary energy project.
Fuel Cells Are Already Operating at Data-Center Scale
The technology is not limited to new AI campuses. Bloom and Equinix have expanded fuel-cell deployments across 19 U.S. data centers, exceeding 100 MW of capacity, with approximately 75 MW operational and another 30 MW under construction as of early 2025.
The progression from a 1 MW pilot in 2015 to more than 100 MW illustrates how onsite fuel cells can scale when reliability and grid constraints justify the investment.
India Is Creating a Larger Addressable Infrastructure Base
India's data-center capacity has expanded from 375 MW in 2020 to approximately 1,575 MW in 2026, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. AI and high-performance computing are increasing demand, while operators are adopting direct-to-chip, immersion and closed-loop liquid cooling for higher-density workloads.
For fuel-cell suppliers, this creates potential opportunities around onsite generation, microgrids and resilient power architectures, particularly where new facilities face power availability or infrastructure constraints.
Where Companies Should Focus
The strongest opportunities are emerging around multi-megawatt SOFC systems, hydrogen-ready fuel cells, primary-power applications, microgrids, hybrid fuel-cell-plus-battery systems and low-water power generation.
Suppliers should also evaluate the economics of different fuels. Natural-gas-based systems can address immediate power constraints, while hydrogen fuel cells offer a longer-term pathway toward lower-carbon operation as hydrogen infrastructure develops.
Strategic Outlook
The market is moving toward a new role for fuel cells: not simply emergency backup, but an alternative source of primary power for AI infrastructure.
The key commercial questions are therefore shifting toward which data-center campuses face the largest grid constraints, how quickly onsite generation can be deployed, what fuel pathway is economically viable, and whether financing models can support gigawatt-scale projects.
