The Number on the Cup Is Not Enough

PET

PET is commonly associated with clear cold-drink lids.

Its rigidity and transparency make it useful for iced beverages and drinks where presentation matters.

It is not the natural choice for sustained hot-drink applications.

PLA

PLA is often selected when compostable packaging is part of the product strategy.

But there is an important qualification.

PLA should not automatically be treated as a hot-coffee lid material simply because it is a plant-derived bioplastic.

Its heat performance can be limiting, and the exact formulation and application need to be checked.

The disposal system matters too.

A compostable lid only delivers its intended end-of-life benefit when the appropriate composting infrastructure exists.

Hot Drinks and Cold Drinks Ask Different Questions

A hot coffee creates heat and steam.

A cold drink creates a different set of problems: ice, condensation, movement and sometimes a large straw opening.

This is why hot and cold lids should not be treated as interchangeable just because they have the same diameter.

A hot beverage lid may need controlled venting.

a customer's front door;
and finally a table.

Every step creates movement.

The same lid that is perfectly adequate for counter service may not be the best choice for a delivery-heavy operation.

That does not mean every delivery order needs the most expensive lid available.

EU Sourcing Adds Another Requirement
