Russell and co-author Hector Bode, Research Assistant and Data Analyst, published "Public sentiment toward traditional mental health providers and AI alternatives: a mixed-methods analysis of 2025 multilingual X discourse" in Frontiers in Human Dynamics on February 13, 2026. The study used a mixed-methods approach to examine 496 high-engagement posts published on X from January 1 through September 1, 2025. The dataset included discourse in English and Spanish, enabling the authors to assess quantitative sentiment patterns alongside the narratives shaping public views of traditional mental health providers and artificial intelligence-based alternatives.

The analysis found 61% to 65% negative sentiment toward traditional providers, with public discourse citing prohibitive costs and perceived inefficacy. At the same time, 53% to 58% of sentiment toward AI was positive, driven by accessibility, anonymity, and scalability. That interest remained qualified: people also criticized AI for failing to replicate human empathy.

Spanish-language discourse added a distinct cultural dimension by positioning AI anonymity as a countermeasure to cultural stigma. Taken together, the findings suggest that AI is being adopted not as a therapeutic equivalent, but as a pragmatic tool for navigating deficiencies in traditional care. The paper warns that AI could become a technological patch for systemic problems and calls for hybrid systems that use AI ethically without absolving the human system of its duty to care.

"People appear to be turning to AI not because it replaces the therapeutic relationship, but because it can reduce barriers that too often stand between people and care. The responsible path is to design hybrid systems that use technology transparently and ethically while strengthening, rather than excusing, the human system's obligation to provide accessible and empathetic care," said Dr. Bethany R. Russell.

The findings have practical implications across mental health care. Clinicians can use the analysis to understand which barriers are shaping public trust and technology adoption. Developers can prioritize accessibility, transparency, and responsible integration rather than attempting to imitate human empathy. Policymakers can address the underlying cost, access, and stigma concerns that make technological alternatives attractive while supporting hybrid models that preserve human accountability.
