Author and community advocate Dr. Mary Nelson announces the release of her deeply personal memoir, Dr. Mary Nelson Story. The book offers readers an intimate look into a life shaped by family, faith, and a lifelong commitment to service.
Dr. Mary Nelson Story shares Nelson's journey in her own words, tracing the love and compassion shown to her by her mother, father, and extended family, and how those early lessons shaped the woman she is today. The book is not a story of perfection but one of perseverance, gratitude, and purpose.
Through honest storytelling, Nelson invites readers into the moments that shaped her, from the foundation built by her family to a lifetime spent giving back to her community.
"I wanted to share my story to inspire others that you can achieve any goal you set for yourself," Nelson shares.
Nelson hopes the book reaches readers of every age who want to know the woman behind a lifetime of genuine care for others, and the message at its heart speaks to anyone who has struggled to put themselves first.
"Life can and will be challenging, and believing in yourself is the most important thing," Nelson writes. "You cannot take care of others unless you heal yourself first."
Dr. Mary Nelson Story is more than a memoir. It is a message of hope for anyone seeking the strength to heal, believe, and give back. Through heartfelt reflection, Nelson encourages readers to see life's challenges as part of a larger purpose rather than the end of the story.
Nelson's impact reaches well beyond the page. She is widely recognized for her community work and has received numerous honors, including the Post-Standard Achievement Award, the Harriet Tubman Humanitarian Award in Albany, New York, the National Council of Negro Women Award, and the YWCA Academy of Diversity Achievers Award. She was honored during Black History Month in 2011 by Upstate Medical University's Hope & Healing program and received the New York State Senate 49th District Women of Distinction Award. She has been featured in Syracuse Women Magazine, WomELLE Magazine, and PASSION VISTA International Magazine, and was honored on the cover of the 2024 IAOTP (International Association of Top Professionals) publication in Nashville, Tennessee.
In August 2023, Nelson attended Oprah's "Life You Want" Weekend in Newark, New Jersey, where Oprah Winfrey personally visited the Dr. Mary Nelson Youth Center and provided a generous monetary donation. In September 2021, the Youth Center received a complete makeover through a partnership with Lowe's and HGTV's "Build It Forward," hosted by Taniya Nayak and Matt Blashaw, alongside Jim and Julie Boeheim and numerous community sponsors. On April 6, 2024, Nelson received the World Peace Medallion in Mumbai, India, and went on to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities and the 2024 Top Youth Advocate Award from IAOTP in Nashville, Tennessee. Her story was also featured in a USA Today article in May 2025.
Early readers describe the book as: A heartfelt tribute to family and faith, A genuine reflection on healing and self-worth, an inspiring reminder that purpose grows from giving back
