NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Porcelain veneers can change the shape, color, and proportions of teeth while preserving most of the natural tooth structure, according to Dr. Michael Covaney, a prosthodontist serving Newport News. He said the treatment suits patients who want a noticeable improvement without extensive restorative work.
Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells bonded to the front surface of teeth. Dentists commonly use them to address chips, small gaps, minor misalignment, uneven tooth length, worn edges, and discoloration that does not respond to whitening. Rather than replacing a tooth, a veneer refines the one already there.
“The goal is a smile that looks like the best version of the patient’s own, not a different one,” Dr. Covaney said. “Veneers let us adjust shape, length, and shade in small, deliberate ways, so the result looks natural in conversation and in photographs.”
Treatment typically begins with a consultation to discuss the patient’s goals and an exam to confirm that the teeth and gums are healthy enough for cosmetic work. Preparation usually involves removing a very thin layer of enamel so the veneer sits flush with neighboring teeth. Depending on the case, temporary veneers may be worn while a dental laboratory crafts the final restorations. At the final visit, the veneers are bonded in place, and the fit, bite, and shade are checked and fine-tuned.
Porcelain is favored for its resistance to staining and for the way it reflects light much like natural enamel. That helps veneers blend with surrounding teeth and hold their color despite regular exposure to coffee, tea, and wine. With good care, veneers can last many years. Dentists advise routine brushing and flossing, regular checkups, and avoiding habits such as chewing ice or biting hard objects. Patients who clench or grind their teeth may be advised to wear a protective nightguard.
Veneers are not the right choice for every smile. Active decay or gum disease must be treated first, and in some cases whitening, composite bonding, or crowns may better suit a patient’s needs. He said weighing those alternatives openly is part of a sound consultation and keeps treatment focused on what the patient wants to change.
“If a simpler option reaches the same result, that is the one we should recommend,” he said.
Dr. Covaney earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery with honors and completed advanced prosthodontic training at VCU/MCV School of Dentistry. He is a member of the American College of Prosthodontists and has more than two decades of experience in restorative and cosmetic cases. He is one of only two practicing prosthodontists between Hampton and Richmond.
The practice is accepting new patients. Consultations can be requested through the practice’s website.
