Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, declares July 25, 2026 Dimagu Day in the Great Lakes State

More than 100 professionals of Dimagu heritage, accompanied by their families and friends, are traveling from various locations in the United States and Canada to metro Detroit, Michigan, for a July 24-26, 2026 convention centered around communal care.

Convention highlights include a volunteer initiative with Dr. Chad Audi at a Detroit Rescue Mission location serving women and children, with special appearance by Detroit News columnist and presidential author Bankole Thompson, and a fundraising dinner cruise offering live music and stunning views of both Detroit, and Windsor Canada.

A free admission gala scheduled for July 25th will honor five Americans with royal recognition, and feature welcome remarks from Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman.

“Communal care is an essential element of Dimagu culture. We care for our family, friends and neighbors,” states Mazi Chris Nwaogu, president of Dimagu Community USA, the nonprofit that draws on the generosity of individuals of Dimagu descent, who will attend the convention from Massachusetts.

The convention gala will be co-emceed by media veteran Lavonia Perryman, former Ms Black Michigan and the first female to be inducted into the American Basketball Hall of Fame, and Chuck B. Duruebube, the organization’s president emeritus who works in the public sector in Atlanta, Georgia.

“We recognize the contributions of so many notable achievers in the Dimagu community,” remarks Michigan Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, while declaring July 25, 2026 as Dimagu Day in the State.

Dimagu achievers attending the weekend convention include engineers, physicians and nurses, law enforcement officials, educators and entrepreneurs, who share a passion for fostering community connections and generating funds for life-enhancing projects such as the Dimagu Health Center.

When operational, the Center will provide affordable primary healthcare services to women, children, youth, seniors and persons living with disabilities in the semi-rural Dimagu Community of Imo State, Nigeria.

Kelechi Akusobi, a New York-born real estate developer and president of Umu Igbo Unite Tri-State, embodies the excitement surrounding the health center project, which he says, “will not only elevate Dimagu but also improve the hearts within” the community he fondly calls his “source of becoming.”

Uchenna Anyamele, leader of DimaguNextGen4Christ, a Dimagu youth mentorship initiative, will be traveling from Canada to attend the Convention. “Individuals facing different life circumstances,’ according to him, ‘tend to thrive when they have support systems such as Dimagu Community USA.”

That is why the five outstanding Americans receiving Honorary Dimagu Citizenship from Dimagu king, His Royal Highness, Eze Godwin Osuala, are individuals dedicated to providing support to those in need. They include Operation Refuge founder and 1st Vice President Western Wayne NAACP Pastor Velma Overman, Eye Care for Detroit founder Dr. Cleamon Moorer, Lotus & Sage Leadership founder Catreese Qualls, Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen, and Premier One Group Inc. founder Brigitte Jaward-Hachem.

“These honorees exemplify communal care, and have in many ways demonstrated empathy and compassion,” concludes Rev. Dr. C. Paschal Eze, the Convention Organizing Committee Chair, and US Congressional Record honoree who serves as City of Westland’s Director of Community Engagement.
