After the introduction of the ICC World Test Championship, Test cricket has been reborn. Fans who had almost drifted away from red-ball cricket are now eagerly following every Test series across all Test-playing nations, especially India, Australia, and England.
A total of three World Test Championship cycles have been completed so far. New Zealand were the inaugural champions, Australia won the second edition, and South Africa are the reigning champions.
The fourth cycle of the World Test Championship is currently in progress, and every team is giving its best to claim the title. The Indian team is also determined to lift the Test Mace. Following the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the Indian Test side has entered a new era under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
India has already played two Test series in this cycle. The first was in England, where the team successfully drew the five-match series 2–2, despite trailing 0–1 and 1–2 earlier. Recently, India defeated the West Indies 2–0 in a two-match home series. The Indian team will now host South Africa in a three-match Test series starting November 14. After that, India will tour New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and host Australia for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Each team will play a total of six Test series, three at home and three away. For every victory, 12 points will be awarded, while a draw will earn both teams 4 points each. If a match is tied, both sides will share 6 points. The ICC evaluates the points table using a percentage system, since teams do not play an equal number of matches per series. The major teams like India, England, and Australia typically play five-match series, while others, such as Pakistan, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka, usually play two-match series.
After the conclusion of the WTC cycle, the top two teams on the points table will compete in the World Test Championship Final.
A total of nine teams are participating in the World Test Championship, all competing for a spot in the 2027 Final. Australia currently holds the No. 1 position, while Sri Lanka is ranked No. 2. The Indian team is currently placed third on the points table.
This cycle has already produced several standout performances and unforgettable moments from players across all participating teams. Fans have been thrilled by remarkable feats such as Wian Mulder’s 367* against Zimbabwe in Harare, and Shubman Gill’s 269* against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham, keeping cricket lovers on the edge of their seats.
