BFC Publications is proud to announce the release of Church of North India – Her Unity and Witness 1929–1970 (Volume I), authored by Monodeep Daniel.

This compelling historical study offers an in-depth exploration of the unification of Protestant churches in northern India, culminating in the formation of the Church of North India (CNI) in 1970.

Faced with centuries of social discrimination and disadvantage, Dalit communities in India found a sense of belonging and dignity within the Christian faith. Among these, the CNI emerged as a remarkable example of unity and transformation. However, the path to integration was far from simple. The missionaries who first established the church carried with them the inherited divisions of European Christianity. Over time, Indian Christian leaders recognized the need for unity and took on the challenging task of bringing diverse denominations together under one body.

This first volume chronicles the forty-year journey—from 1929 to 1970—of a broken yet determined community striving toward unity. It vividly recounts the Round Table Conferences that began in 1929 and the Negotiation Committee meetings that followed, leading to the landmark Plan of Church Union in North India and Pakistan (1965)—the foundation upon which six denominations united to form the Church of North India.
Meticulously researched and deeply insightful, the book captures the negotiations, theological debates, and human perseverance that defined this monumental ecumenical movement. It not only highlights the historical milestones but also the faith and resilience of the Indian Christian leadership who made the dream of unity a living reality.

Inaugurated on November 29, 1970, at All Saints’ Cathedral grounds in Nagpur, the Church of North India has since stood as a symbol of collective faith, overcoming numerous social, legal, and political challenges over the past five decades.

Church of North India – Her Unity and Witness 1929–1970 (Volume I) is a significant contribution to church history and theological studies. Scholars, theologians, and readers interested in India’s socio-religious evolution will find this work both illuminating and inspiring.

This research and publication form part of the fiftieth jubilee decade celebrating the inauguration of the CNI—a story of people rooted in Christ and deeply connected to the soil of their motherland, India.
