Can a Teeth Whitening Appointment Support Domestic Violence Survivors? Nashua Dentist Explains

Center for Dental Excellence’s Dr. Andy Janiga, DMD, breaks down the $100 fee, who is eligible and how it supports Give Back a Smile

Yes, in an indirect way. During Whiten for a Reason, a patient’s professional whitening fee supports Give Back a Smile®, a charitable program that connects adult survivors of domestic violence with volunteer dentists. Center for Dental Excellence in Nashua, New Hampshire, led by Dr. Andy Janiga, DMD, is taking part in the 2026 campaign this October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

What is Whiten for a Reason?
It is an October campaign in which dental practices offer professional teeth whitening, with the fee supporting Give Back a Smile. The program is part of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation, and the 2026 goal is to help raise $20,000.

How does it work?

1. A patient books a whitening appointment during the campaign conducted in Oct 2026.
2. One of the practice’s doctors evaluates and approves the patient for whitening.
3. The patient receives professional whitening using Opalescence Go.
4, The $100 fee supports Give Back a Smile.

Who is eligible?
All whitening candidates must be evaluated and approved by one of the practice’s doctors. New patients are welcome. A new patient exam, X-rays and any other treatment are billed separately and are not part of the $100.

Where does the money go?
The whitening itself does not treat survivors. The fee supports the program’s operations, such as prescreening eligible survivors, coordinating care and recruiting volunteer dentists. According to Give Back a Smile, it has provided more than $20 million in donated services since 1999, and every $1 donated is leveraged more than 30 times in donated dental care.

Is the fee tax-deductible?
Possibly in part. Because patients receive a professional service, only the portion of a payment above the fair market value of the whitening may be deductible. A tax advisor can advise on individual situations.

“Many people are curious how a whitening appointment connects to a cause. We hope this explanation makes it easy to see how one visit can support someone else’s care,” said a spokesperson for Center for Dental Excellence.
