In recent months, veterinary professionals at Dominion Valley Animal Hospital have observed a rise in respiratory diseases among dogs in the community. One of the most common conditions identified is Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), often referred to as kennel cough. Despite its name, CIRDC is not limited to kennel environments. Any setting where dogs interact—such as daycare facilities, shelters, dog parks, grooming salons, or training classes—can increase the risk of exposure.
CIRDC is caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses that affect the upper respiratory tract. Common signs include a sudden, dry, honking cough that may be accompanied by gagging or retching. Some dogs may also experience sneezing, nasal discharge, or watery eyes. Importantly, not all infected dogs will cough, which can make early detection more challenging.
While many cases are mild and resolve with supportive care, more severe infections can occur. Symptoms such as lethargy, reduced appetite, fever, productive coughing, or labored breathing may indicate complications like bacterial pneumonia. Puppies, senior dogs, dogs with pre-existing medical conditions, or those infected with viruses such as canine distemper are at higher risk for serious illness.
CIRDC spreads easily through respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces, making prompt isolation of sick dogs essential. Certain CIRDC-related pathogens may also infect cats, though this is less common. Human infection is extremely rare and generally limited to severely immunocompromised individuals.
Diagnosis and treatment depend on the severity of the illness and may include diagnostic testing, antibiotics, cough suppressants, and supportive care. Preventive measures remain the best defense. Dominion Valley Animal Hospital strongly recommends keeping dogs up to date on vaccinations, including Bordetella, Adenovirus 2, parainfluenza, and canine influenza, even if boosters are not yet due.
