Hotel development in the UAE continues to expand rapidly, with Dubai welcoming a record 18.7 million visitors and adding more than 4,200 new hotel keys in 2024. While this growth strengthens the economy and tourism sector, it places increasing pressure on marine ecosystems, especially coral reefs. Decades of coastal construction and dredging on the UAE's west coast have disrupted ocean environments, creating sediment pollution, reducing sunlight penetration, and accelerating coral bleaching. According to Freestyle Divers CEO Darryl Owen, some coral species have declined by up to 90%, triggering a cascading loss of marine biodiversity.
Acknowledging this environmental impact and recognising the rising demand for sustainable travel, Accor has strengthened its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts through a four-pillar strategy focusing on carbon reduction, waste minimisation, water conservation, and biodiversity protection. As part of this commitment, Novotel Suites Mall Avenue and Novotel Deira Creekside have partnered with Freestyle Divers' Project REEFrame, a coral reef regeneration initiative established after severe bleaching was observed in Dibba, Fujairah.
Project REEFrame, founded by Owen after shifting from a corporate career to marine conservation, uses science-based methods to regenerate coral reefs. Over the past five years, the team has secured environmental permits, recruited marine biologists, and begun restoring a second 40,000 sqm site with coral nurseries. Their goal: rebuild coastal ecosystems and educate communities on marine stewardship.
For Novotel, the partnership is both a sustainability action and a brand differentiator. Nishan Silva, regional GM, Dubai & Emirates North, Accor says: "In today's world, consumers are more conscientious than ever. By actively engaging in marine conservation, Novotel Suites Mall Avenue and Novotel Deira Creekside set themselves apart as leaders in eco-friendly hospitality. This dedication to sustainability does more than just attract environmentally conscious guests; it fosters deep loyalty. Customers increasingly want to support brands that positively affect the environment, knowing their choice contributes to a safer future. When guests stay with us, they not only enjoy an exceptional experience, but they also feel connected to a cause greater than themselves."
To ensure long-term impact, Novotel leaders and team members participated in planting their first coral nursery in Dibba. Freestyle Divers will monitor coral growth monthly and provide quarterly updates, aiming to outplant the regenerated corals onto a permanent reef within a year. The hotels are enhancing guest engagement as well, offering ocean-themed children's activities and hosting young sustainability champions for educational field trips that cover coral ecology, responsible waste management, and AI-driven food-waste reduction technologies like Winnow.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative supports the long-term business strategy of both properties. With eco-tourism on the rise and investors increasingly prioritising ESG-strong brands, Novotel's commitment positions the hotels for sustainable, long-term success.
