Building More Than a Factory — Building a Global Standard
While many green industry projects focus on manufacturing capacity, the vision of Ecopha DrukBees is fundamentally different.
The objective is not to build the world's largest factory, but to establish the world's most credible Model & Certification System for the circular bioeconomy.
The project will demonstrate the complete Pongamia value chain—from seed collection, nursery development, plantation establishment, farmer engagement and feedstock production, through integrated biorefining to the co-production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and PHA biodegradable bioplastics, before returning PHA products naturally to carbon dioxide (CO₂), water (H₂O), and biomass, which are subsequently reabsorbed by new generations of Pongamia trees.
This creates a true Circular Bioeconomy, where carbon continuously cycles through nature rather than becoming waste.
World's First Co-Production Technology for SAF and PHA
Ecopha has developed a globally unique technology and has filed an international PCT patent application for its innovation.
Unlike conventional technologies that produce only Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Ecopha's proprietary Integrated Biorefinery technology enables the simultaneous co-production of:
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) biodegradable bioplastics
This world-first co-production platform significantly improves feedstock utilisation, enhances overall project economics, lowers production costs, and creates greater environmental value by producing both renewable energy and biodegradable materials from the same renewable resource.
It represents a major breakthrough for both aviation decarbonisation and the global transition away from conventional plastics.
Bhutan — The World's Ideal Demonstration and Certification Hub
Bhutan is globally recognised as the world's only carbon-negative country and one of the most forested nations on Earth.
Guided by its philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH), Bhutan has successfully balanced environmental conservation, economic development and social well-being.
For this reason, Ecopha and DrukBees believe Bhutan's greatest value is not to become another large-scale manufacturing country, but to serve as the world's premier Living Demonstration & Certification Hub for the circular bioeconomy.
Future governments, investors, researchers and industry partners from around the world will be able to learn from, validate and replicate the Bhutan model.
Australia Provides Innovation — Bhutan Establishs the Global Standard
Under the partnership:
Australia contributes
- World's first SAF & PHA co-production technology
- Integrated Biorefinery technology
- Ecopha AI Digital Platform
- Digital Traceability System
- International certification framework
- Global commercialisation and market development
Bhutan provides
- Global demonstration sites
- Nursery and plantation development
- Farmer participation and capacity building
- Project validation
- International certification collaboration
- Long-term policy support for sustainable development
Together, Australia and Bhutan are creating not merely an industrial project, but an internationally recognised development framework that can be adopted worldwide.
Establishing a Global Circular Bioeconomy Certification System
Every Pongamia tree established under the programme will receive its own Digital Tree Passport.
From seed origin, GPS location, planting date, growth performance and carbon sequestration to the final production of SAF and PHA products, every stage will be digitally recorded through Ecopha's AI-powered platform, creating complete end-to-end traceability.
The system will progressively establish international standards for:
- Pongamia plantation certification
- Feedstock traceability
- Carbon sequestration and emissions reduction
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel certification
- PHA biodegradable material certification
- Circular Bioeconomy certification
This will enable future projects worldwide to be developed, verified and certified under a common international framework.
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships Across Bhutan
The establishment of Ecopha DrukBees Private Limited also strengthens Ecopha's strategic collaborations with key government agencies and national institutions in Bhutan, including:
- Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL), Royal Government of Bhutan
- Drukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines
- Bhutan Airlines
- Bhutan Agro Industries Limited (BAIL)
These collaborations will support the development of the Pongamia industry, smart agriculture, farmer participation, digital traceability, international certification, Sustainable Aviation Fuel deployment, PHA biodegradable materials, and global market expansion.
Together, these partnerships will build an integrated ecosystem connecting government, research institutions, aviation, agriculture and advanced manufacturing to position Bhutan as the world's leading Circular Bioeconomy Demonstration & Certification Hub.
From Bhutan to the World
Dr. Wilson Ling, Founder and CEO of Ecopha and Adjunct Associate Professor at Murdoch University, said:
"The greatest impact we can create is not by building another factory, but by building a development model that the world can trust and replicate. Australia contributes world-leading innovation, while Bhutan contributes one of the world's most precious natural environments. Together, we are not simply developing a project—we are establishing a new global standard for the Circular Bioeconomy. As Pongamia industries expand around the world, Bhutan will become the world's most trusted demonstration and certification hub."
A New Chapter in Australia–Bhutan Green Cooperation
As the world accelerates towards Net Zero, demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel, biodegradable materials and trusted carbon management systems continues to grow rapidly.
The establishment of Ecopha DrukBees represents far more than a bilateral partnership. It marks the creation of the world's first Global Circular Bioeconomy Model & Certification System centred on Pongamia.
The demonstration model, digital platform, certification framework and industry standards developed in Bhutan will progressively be introduced to China, India, the United States, Brazil, as well as Southeast Asia, Africa and other regions suitable for Pongamia cultivation.
Regardless of where future projects are established, they will be able to adopt the standards, digital traceability system and certification framework developed in Bhutan, while Australia's innovation, intellectual property and commercial expertise continue to support their successful implementation.
Together, Australia and Bhutan are laying the foundation for a truly global Circular Bioeconomy.
