Velana International Airport in Malé is offering international travellers a refreshed arrival and departure experience following the opening of its new Terminal 1, providing a modern gateway to the Maldives’ world-renowned island resorts.

The new international terminal features high ceilings and wave-inspired design elements across its walls, floors and ceilings, creating a spacious environment that reflects the destination’s tropical and ocean-focused character. The previous terminal building now serves domestic flights, while international departures are handled through the new facility.

Passenger processing includes dedicated check-in counters for scheduled and charter services, with a range of airline desks supporting international departures. Security and immigration facilities are designed to accommodate passengers efficiently, although additional security screening at boarding gates can result in congestion during busy periods.

The terminal also provides a selection of food and beverage outlets, including international and local options, giving passengers convenient choices while waiting for their flights. As alcohol consumption is prohibited in Malé, airport dining and lounge facilities offer non-alcoholic beverage options.

Retail facilities include a spacious duty-free area featuring luxury goods, travel essentials and local products. Passengers can also access complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, while many seating areas provide convenient access to power for charging electronic devices.

Eligible passengers can make use of the airport’s airside premium lounge, offering a quieter environment before departure. The lounge is available to selected premium passengers and provides comfortable seating and non-alcoholic refreshments.

The airport serves as the primary international gateway for travellers heading to the Maldives, with visitors continuing their journeys to individual resort islands by seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight.

The improved terminal forms part of the Maldives’ efforts to enhance its international aviation infrastructure and provide travellers with facilities that better reflect the country’s position as a leading luxury tourism destination.
