In a major push to strengthen India’s agricultural value chain, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has announced comprehensive financial assistance under the Subsidy for Storage Infrastructure Scheme, aimed at developing robust agricultural marketing and post-harvest infrastructure across the country.
This initiative, implemented under the Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure (AMI) component, is open-ended, demand-driven, and provides back-ended subsidies to a wide range of beneficiaries, including farmers, FPOs, agri-preneurs, cooperatives, and state agencies.
Purpose and Benefits:
The scheme’s primary objective is to enhance storage and marketing infrastructure and minimize post-harvest losses. It supports the construction and modernization of godowns, cold storages, grading facilities, and value chain infrastructure across rural India. NABARD’s subsidy for storage infrastructure aims to create an efficient link between farmers and markets, thereby ensuring better price realization and reduced wastage.
Key Activities Covered:
• Storage Infrastructure: Construction and modernization of godowns, cold storages, and other warehousing units.
• GrAM Development: Upgradation of Gramin Agricultural Markets (GrAMs) with better facilities.
• Common Facilitation Centers (CFCs): Infrastructure support for FPOs to improve collective operations.
• Marketing in APMC Yards: Strengthening of infrastructure within Agricultural Produce Market Committees.
• Direct and Mobile Infrastructure: Support for direct marketing, reefer vans, and mobile storage units.
• Integrated Value Chain (IVC) Projects: Projects that combine storage, primary processing, and value addition.
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants:
The scheme is open to:
• Farmers and agri-preneurs
• Registered FPOs and Cooperatives
• Panchayati Raj Institutions and State Agencies
• Women entrepreneurs, SC/ST beneficiaries, and SHGs
Empowering Rural India:
Speaking on the initiative, a NABARD official highlighted that the subsidy for storage infrastructure plays a crucial role in empowering rural stakeholders by enhancing their capacity to store, process, and market produce efficiently. The initiative complements the government’s broader vision of “Doubling Farmers’ Income” and promoting sustainable agri-business growth.
