G.Armani Suit, an independent bespoke tailor in Pratunam, Bangkok, has published a planning guide for grooms and groomsmen who are getting married in Thailand. The guide starts from the venue instead of the suit, because where and when a couple marries decides most of the other choices.

Start from the venue

For an air-conditioned ballroom, the guide recommends a proper dinner suit, and notes that midnight blue reads blacker than black under artificial light. For a garden, temple or riverside wedding it suggests tropical-weight wool or wool-linen in mid-blue, olive or warm grey, and says a three-piece suit works because the evening cools. For a beach wedding it suggests linen or wool-linen in stone, sand or pale blue, and advises skipping the waistcoat.

Dressing the whole party

The guide gives four rules. Order the whole party from the same bolt of cloth, because two navy jackets cut from different batches can look different in the same photograph. Match the party without cloning it, for example by giving the groom a different lapel or a waistcoat. Fit every man individually. Nominate one person, usually the best man, to hold the schedule.

A timeline that works backwards from the date

The shop recommends six to eight weeks before the wedding, and earlier if a whole party is being dressed. Before arriving, the couple sends the date, venue, party size and colour scheme so cloth can be pulled in advance. At the first appointment everyone is measured, then each man has individual fittings, and the final collection is at least 48 hours before the ceremony. Guests arriving on different days can be scheduled around, and express options exist for tighter dates and out-of-town groomsmen. The shop also suggests asking for a working lapel buttonhole if boutonnieres are planned.
