India's First Independent Reading Growth Program Contributes to Global Reading Research at SSSR 2026

GroBro's first participation at SSSR 2026 included two peer-reviewed research presentations and contributions to the conference's international peer-review process.

GroBro.ai, an Indian edtech initiative focused on scientifically curated reading development, contributed to the Thirty-Third Annual Conference of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading (SSSR) 2026, held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Recognised as one of the leading international conferences dedicated to the scientific study of reading, SSSR brings together researchers, educators and literacy experts from around the world to share evidence-based research that advances the understanding of how people learn to read.

Following a peer-review process, two research submissions from the GroBro team were accepted for presentation at the conference, marking the organisation's first participation at SSSR.

The team's oral presentation, "Redefining How We Measure Reading Proficiency Through Comprehension," explored the need to rethink conventional approaches to reading assessment by placing comprehension at the centre of reading proficiency. Rather than relying solely on decoding accuracy or reading fluency, the research emphasised that meaningful understanding should be the foundation for evaluating how well a child reads.

The team's second accepted contribution, a research poster titled "In What Ways Do Early-Age Learners of English as a Second Language Progress From Basic Reading to Meaningful Comprehension?", examined how young ESL learners progress from recognising words to constructing meaning. The study contributes to a broader understanding of how reading comprehension develops during the early stages of language acquisition.

Together, these research contributions reflect GroBro's commitment to advancing evidence-based approaches to reading education and contributing to the global conversation on reading comprehension and literacy development.
Beyond presenting research, members of the GroBro research team also contributed to the conference's peer-review process. Rishabh Rathod and Vatsal Dalal each reviewed approximately 20 research submissions as official SSSR reviewers, supporting the evaluation of research abstracts submitted by researchers from around the world.

Representing the GroBro research team at the conference, Kajal presented both accepted research contributions and engaged with researchers and educators working across the field of reading science.

At the heart of GroBro's research is a simple belief: reading proficiency is not merely the ability to decode words on a page, but the ability to construct meaning from them. This philosophy underpins both the organisation's research and its adaptive reading programme, which aims to help children develop measurable reading growth through scientifically informed assessment and personalised reading experiences.
