Gulf University’s Mechanical Engineering student Fatima Al-Jowder won the Bahrain Society of Engineers Award for her “Autonomous Oil Skimmer” project, highlighting sustainable innovation and the university’s engineering excellence.

Fatima Al-Jowder, a distinguished student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering, Gulf University — which delivers its academic programs in collaboration with the University of Northampton (UK) — has achieved an outstanding milestone by winning the Bahrain Society of Engineers Award for Best Graduation Project in Mechanical Engineering.

This prestigious recognition reaffirms Gulf University’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and the preparation of highly skilled engineers capable of competing and excelling on both national and international stages.

The award-winning project, titled “Autonomous Oil Skimmer RC Boat: A Self-Sustaining System for Surface Oil Spill Recovery,” showcases an innovative engineering solution designed to combat marine pollution. The project features a smart, remotely operated vessel capable of autonomously collecting oil spills from water surfaces through a sustainable, energy-efficient system.

This pioneering work reflects the spirit of innovation and environmental responsibility championed by Gulf University and aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly those related to Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Life Below Water (SDG 14).

The project was supervised by Dr. Mohammed Al-Sheikhly, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who expressed his pride in this exceptional achievement, noting that the award reflects the supportive academic environment for research and innovation that Gulf University provides in collaboration with the University of Northampton.

Commenting on her win, Fatima Al-Jowder expressed her pride in representing Gulf University in this prestigious engineering forum, stating that the project was the result of a journey filled with learning, challenges, and a passion for engineering and innovation. She also extended her gratitude to her professors and the College of Engineering for their support in developing her ideas and transforming them into a practical, effective prototype.

In this context, Dr. Aseel Al-Ayyash, Dean of the College of Engineering, stated:

“The success of our student, Fatima Al-Jowder, in winning this award reflects the advanced level our students have reached in scientific research and practical application. It also underscores Gulf University’s commitment to supporting national talent and encouraging them to create innovative solutions aligned with global trends in sustainability and technology.”

This recognition adds a new milestone to Gulf University’s record of achievements, reinforcing its mission to empower students toward creativity, foster international collaboration, and graduate qualified engineers who contribute to building a sustainable future for the Kingdom of Bahrain.
