Softaken's New WEBP to PNG Tool Runs Entirely in the Browser, No File Uploads Required

The latest release focuses on compatibility, converting web-optimized images into a format accepted almost everywhere

July 13, 2026 — Softaken Software has added a WEBP to PNG converter to its growing collection of free online image tools. The converter does the conversion directly in the user browser, so images are never leaving the device during conversion.
WEBP is the standard format for web images because it loads faster and takes less space than older formats. That efficiency comes at a cost, however. WEBP isn’t widely supported outside of browsers. Many editing programs, printers and older platforms still don’t read it consistently. That’s where Softaken’s new tool comes in, allowing users to convert a WEBP file into a PNG that will open correctly just about anywhere.

A problem of compatibility, not just one of file size
Unlike other recent Softaken launches that focused on file size reduction, this converter aims to solve a different problem: ensuring that an image actually opens where it needs to. A WEBP file that looks fine on a website might not open in some design software, older printers or platforms that haven't updated their supported formats. Converting to PNG fixes that by sacrificing some of WEBP’s efficiency for better compatibility.

“WEBP works great until someone tries to open it on a site that doesn’t support it,” said a Softaken Software spokesperson. ""This is the tool for that moment — when someone just needs the image to work, not to be smaller.

Three Steps, No Server Needed
Users upload a WEBP file, optionally set dimensions or output settings and download the converted PNG file when ready. Users can preview the image on a canvas before saving. All of this happens client-side, so the tool works offline once the page loads, and it works the same in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari, on desktop and mobile.

Transparency Carries Over, File Size Usually Grows
Softaken mentions two things that users should expect. First off, the converted PNG allows for the original WEBP file’s transparency. Both formats allow for transparency, unlike conversions to JPG that will fill transparent areas. Second, the resulting PNG file will usually be larger than the converted WEBP, as PNG is lossless while WEBP is more aggressively compressed. The tool works with one image at a time; for bulk conversion Softaken suggests its downloadable Windows software.

Among Many Free Conversion Tools
Softaken has released WEBP to PNG, a new online image tool. This converter, as well as all other image tools by Softaken works locally, meaning that it does not upload images to a server. Over the past year, the company has continued to develop on this collection, based on the most requested conversions from users.
