How to Select a RF Admittance Level Instrument for Adhesive, Dusty and High-Impact Applications

In chemical raw-material handling, powder and granular-material processes, wastewater treatment and storage tanks, materials may build up on a probe or vessel wall.

1. Why do adhesion and dust make level measurement more difficult?
In chemical raw-material handling, powder and granular-material processes, wastewater treatment and storage tanks, materials may build up on a probe or vessel wall. The process may also involve dust, impact, abrasion, high temperature, high pressure or corrosive media. For a conventional level instrument, changes on the probe surface, changes in the dielectric properties of the material and mechanical impact on the installation structure may affect measurement stability. When material tends to coat the wall, form buildup or continuously impact the probe during filling, selection should not focus only on whether the instrument can measure liquids or solids. The probe structure, sheath material, vessel construction and relative position between the material and probe should also be evaluated.

RF admittance measurement is based on changes in capacitance and RF admittance. According to HCCK’s official information, when the probe is installed in a vessel, the probe acts as one plate of a capacitor and the vessel acts as the other plate. If the vessel is made of an insulating material, a reference electrode should be added. As the level rises, the change in dielectric properties between the two plates changes the capacitance. The RF admittance level instrument detects the change in the radio-frequency circuit and converts it into a linear current output. Understanding this principle helps engineers assess whether the material can produce a sufficient dielectric change, whether a reference electrode is needed and whether a coating layer may affect the measurement condition.

2. What are the selection criteria for HCCK RF admittance instruments?
HCCK’s official HCDN-501 and HCDN-502 product pages state that RF admittance level instruments can be used with liquid and solid materials. The official product information lists the following features: two arbitrary vessel-height points can be used to complete one-time automatic calibration; special impact-resistant and wear-resistant probe sheath materials can support operation in high-temperature, high-pressure, highly corrosive, highly adhesive, high-impact, high-abrasion and dusty environments; the sensor has a simple structure with no moving parts; and the instruments can be used with both liquid and solid materials.

These points can be converted into practical selection questions. In a dusty silo, confirm whether the probe will be directly exposed to falling material, filling flow or pneumatic conveying. For highly adhesive materials, evaluate whether buildup will continuously cover the probe and whether a suitable probe sheath and mounting method are required. For high-temperature, high-pressure or corrosive media, provide the medium name, temperature, pressure and corrosiveness to the technical team before confirming the sensor and sheath solution. Although RF admittance products can be used with many liquid and solid materials, different models, probe forms and installation conditions are not interchangeable.

The official HCDN-501 application information describes a standard rod type for metal vessels and non-conductive media, with a 3 m range and 24 VDC power supply. The official HCDN-502 application information describes a standard cable type for metal vessels and non-conductive media, with a maximum range of 10 m, 24 VDC power supply and two-wire 4–20 mA output. These details belong to the corresponding product pages and should not be applied directly to other HCDN models. If the vessel is non-metallic, the medium is conductive, the silo is long or the project requires a limit alarm, confirm the reference-electrode arrangement, probe form, range and product type separately.

3. How can installation and commissioning errors be reduced?
Before installation, define whether the project requires continuous level output or high- and low-level limit detection. Then confirm vessel material, medium conductivity or dielectric properties, material-piling pattern, inlet location, wall buildup and available probe space. Keep the probe away from direct falling material and strong mechanical impact where possible. Also avoid unassessed coupling between the probe and the vessel wall, heating elements or other metal structures. For an insulating vessel, confirm the reference-electrode arrangement from the product information rather than applying the same installation method used for a metal vessel.

During commissioning, complete the site calibration first, then observe the output at an empty vessel, a normal operating level and a point near the alarm level. If the material produces visible buildup, record the output before and after the coating forms. If dust or filling impact creates short-term signal fluctuations, distinguish actual level changes from process disturbance. For HCDN-501 and HCDN-502, the official information provides rod-type and cable-type application details respectively. The project team should select the structure that matches the vessel dimensions and installation limitations rather than replacing one model with another simply because their housings look similar.

In summary, RF admittance level instruments are suitable for liquid and solid level applications involving adhesion, dust, impact, abrasion or complex media. Stable performance still depends on matching the medium, vessel, probe structure, reference electrode, installation position and calibration method. HCCK HCDN products can be included in the technical evaluation for such projects. The final model, probe form, range, power supply and output should be confirmed according to the site conditions and HCCK’s latest official information.
