NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the wake of a deadly plane crash in Arizona that claimed two lives, a nationally recognized aviation attorney is asking what caused a plane to skid off the runway and burst into flames, killing two people.
According to initial reports, a Piper PA-32 crashed while landing at Marana Regional Airport on April 8 at approximately 5:12 p.m. local time. The aircraft veered off a shorter runway — in use due to construction on the airport’s primary runway — before catching fire. Both people onboard were killed.
The airport does not have an air traffic control tower.
The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the crash, which marks the second fatal incident at the airport in just over a year.
Aviation attorney Keith Williams of Keith Williams Law Group says the circumstances surrounding the crash highlight broader safety concerns that extend beyond a single incident.
“This tragedy raises serious questions about whether additional safety measures could have made a difference,” said Williams. “When an airport is relying on a shortened runway because the main runway is under construction, the margin for error can narrow significantly.”
Williams emphasized that investigators will need to closely examine multiple factors, including airport conditions, pilot decision-making, and aircraft maintenance records.
“Every aspect of this flight will be scrutinized,” he added. “From runway availability to maintenance logs, even small oversights can have catastrophic consequences. Thorough inspections and adherence to safety protocols are absolutely essential.”
As federal investigators work to determine the cause, Williams says the aviation industry should view the incident as a reminder of the importance of layered safety systems — particularly at non-towered airports undergoing construction.
In addition to his practice, Williams is the Past Chair of the American Association for Justice’s Aviation Litigation Section, and he is a member of the Aviation and Space Law Committee of the American Bar Association’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section. Mr. Williams is also a member and past president of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association.
