WASHINGTON, D.C. — While national employment numbers suggest stability, a Washington, D.C.-based career coach says underlying regional trends point to a quieter, more competitive job market — making now the smartest time for professionals to pursue new opportunities.
Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the U.S. economy added roughly 130,000 jobs in January, with unemployment holding steady at 4.3%. However, preliminary figures from the D.C. Department of Employment Services indicate unemployment in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area remains above the national average, with the District approaching the mid-six percent range at the close of 2025.
“The national numbers look calm, but locally the market feels tighter and more selective,” says Kerry Smith, a career consultant with KOA Consulting. “That disconnect is why waiting for a so-called dream job can be risky right now.”
Smith says today’s workforce shifts often happen without the splashy headlines of mass layoffs. Instead, organizations are trimming staff through restructurings, budget realignments, and more stringent performance standards—changes that steadily increase competition for open roles.
“These are quiet reductions, but their impact is very real,” Smith explains. “Professionals are coming to me every week after learning their roles no longer align with the company’s priorities or that entire functions are being reimagined.”
At the same time, Smith notes that hiring managers are becoming more cautious with experienced candidates, scrutinizing salary expectations, long-term fit, and perceived tenure risk.
“Employers want confidence that a candidate is choosing a role intentionally, not settling,” she says. “Job seekers who can clearly articulate why they want a specific position — and how they plan to add value over time — stand out.”
Smith’s bottom line: proactive career management is no longer optional.
“The Washington, D.C. job market isn’t collapsing — it’s recalibrating,” she says. “In a recalibrating market, the people who prepare early, position themselves strategically, and communicate their value clearly have far more control over their next move.”
