NEW YORK, August 14, 2026 — A New York Legionnaires’ lawyer now represents the family of another Upper East Side resident who died from Legionnaires’ disease, bringing the death toll tied to the outbreak to at least eight.
Attorney Ronald J. Katter of Katter Law Firm represents ten Upper East Side residents sickened in the latest New York City outbreak.
On July 31, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene declared the outbreak over. The agency reported 92 positive Legionella tests, five hospitalizations and no new cases since July 22. But Katter said the outbreak’s impact is far from over for his clients and their families.
“Today, my client’s family suffered the tragic and needless loss of a loved one,” Katter said. “He battled Legionnaires’ disease for more than four weeks on life support in a hospital ICU and died just as he was about to be discharged to a skilled nursing facility. His family will live with that loss long after the city declared the outbreak over. How many more New Yorkers must die before the city and cooling tower owners act to stop these recurring, preventable deaths?”
